Everyone who knows music has at some time wished to make drum and bass. Most start off arranging samples bought ready made however few have really disclosed the secret of making drum and bass from scratch.
You will need the following equipment to easily make a drum and bass track:
Protools LE or M-powered (buy at least an mobox with 2 line ins a midi port)
A drum sequencer such as DR Rhythm DR-3 (my favourite.. mainly cos its so easy to use)
A macbook pro (runs the whole thing like a dream)
Having loaded protools on (no need for plugins or anything) connect the drum sequencer to the m-box you got with protools (in the line in ports, make sure you enable the buttons at the back and also make sure you adjust volumes on the front of the mbox so you can hear through headphones plugged into the front of protools).
Load up protools and make an aux mono track. Now goto the menu ‘view’ and select edit window and then ‘inserts’. A new block appears next to the aux track. Right click the space next to the arrows here and select a compressor (e.g. bombfactory) and a delay (e.g. extra long delay).
Press start on the drum sequencer (e.g. boss dr rhythm) and press the verse and fill buttons to change the pattern. What you find with funk and hip hop presets on the drum machine that there is an instant and easy to use drum and bass track. Experimenting with various settings (e.g. other plugins to change the sound of the drum sequencer or programming the sequencer through midi – use a usb to midi cable) can lead to new and innovative sounds.
Happy junglisting !”!”! massive!!!!
